How to use it

  1. Type a fraction such as 6/7, a mixed number such as 1 3/4, or a negative fraction such as -5/8.
  2. Read the decimal, the percent and each step of the long division.
  3. If the decimal repeats, the repeating block is marked with a bar.

How to convert a fraction to a decimal

Divide the numerator (top) by the denominator (bottom). For 3/8, 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. To get a percent, multiply the decimal by 100: 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%.

Terminating and repeating decimals

A fraction in lowest terms gives a terminating decimal only when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. So 3/8 = 0.375 ends, while 1/3 = 0.333… repeats forever.

In long division, a decimal starts repeating as soon as a remainder appears for the second time. The calculator tracks the remainders to find exactly where the repeat begins.
